Am I a poet?
I merely use my voice — to
create poetry.

After reading Sahil Patel’s prompt, the first thought that popped into my head was “but am I a poet?”. And to be honest, I don’t consider myself a poet, instead I believe I am a writer who enjoys writing poetry. Poetry provides an outlet to express my feelings and emotions. At times, I write one-line poems to express how grateful I am for my abundant life.

If you are not familiar with my work, I enjoy writing Haiku poems which according to Google is the shortest poetry form, but there are poems that can be shorter. Perhaps free form micro poems, one-lined poems, or sometimes just one word poems or better yet a poem with one letter.

Haiku poems contain 3 lines in a 5–7–5 pattern with a maximum of 17 syllables. It sounds simple, but at times it can be challenging to fully express myself with such limited and fixed parameters.

Writing Haiku poems is as unique experience for me. I don’t believe you have to use a lot of words to make a point or deliver a message. Most Haiku I write derive from emotional triggers from something that I have observed in nature, experienced, or found fascinating in this world. Therefore, they have a personal connection to my heart.
