Why I Smiled The Morning After I Lost My Job

I was freed from the perpetual hamster wheel

I knew the relationship was over, however, I wasn’t brave enough to leave on my own, so the universe and Covid-19 took care of it for me. I enjoyed working for my company because I made good money, and I had received a few promotions over the years, which I viewed as a reflection of success. The people were great, and it was a fun working environment because although we worked hard, we played even harder.

However, there was no fulfillment, no true happiness because I was trapped on the perpetual hamster wheel of the corporate system.

The 7-year itch and the premonition

Nonetheless, at the 7th year mark, I got that damn itch, and for someone like me with commitment issues (don’t ask), that 7th year on the hamster wheel was challenging to overcome. I was ready to stop running but instead, I stayed, and 7 years became 11 years. If it wasn’t for Covid-19, 11 years would have perhaps turned into 25, then 35 years. Consequently, I probably would’ve been retiring from this company working in the same department, more than likely promoted as far up as I would’ve been able to go — that dreaded glass ceiling.
